open mic campus speak out

An Outdoor Speak Out on campus - with an open mic and a even soap-box to stand on

- is a sure draw!

Choose one or more issues that students care about . Have DM students, invited faculty, and those gathered take turns commenting on the problem, why they care, and what students can do about it.

Tips for Success:

  • Set up in a high traffic areas at a time when the most students will be passing by.

  • Choose any important current political issues. Decorate with balloons, and signs inviting participation (e.g. Speak Out on Climate Change - What Do You Think?)

  • Choose a DM member to be MC and encourage everyone to talk about one or more issues they care about and why.

  • The MC should ask provocative questions of audience members (e.g. Why is Congress ignoring climate change? Can you give examples of the impact of climate change on you?).

  • Limit speakers to one or two minutes.

  • Invite faculty to speak also.

  • Publicize a week ahead with repeated social media, class raps, posters, etc.

  • Ask the school paper or publications to cover the speak out.

  • Take pictures for social media and press follow-up.

3) OR you can collaborate by inviting other clubs to co-sponsor the event and have their members prepared to talk about their issues as well as ours. Linking all of them is the best strategy! Invite your faculty to speak out too!

HAVE DM INFORMATION ON FLYERS OR QUARTER CARDS AVAILABLE TO GIVE TO EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE! who can participate,Twho can participate, who can participate, thoughtfully crafted to elevate what matters most.
