media outreach - tell them what you think!
Social media is very effective in reaching out to members, supporters and others on campus. But other media are equally important in spreading DM’s messages.
Campus Newspapers can both inform and recruit by covering and writing about DM events and programs. They can publish opinion articles and leters to the editor by DM members, and they can provide facts and information about political issues.
Local Newspapers especially in small cities and towns - are often willing to cover DM events or publish opinion articles and letters to the editor by DM members.
Campus Publications - Literary, poetry, political and other publications by student groups often need contributions. When DM members write for these publications, they both spread the word about DM and offer ideas and opinions about political issues.
Campus Radio stations run by students can advertise upcoming DM programs and events, interview DM speakers and/or members about issues, and/or arrange phone interviews with experts like DM President Adonal Foyle, or Executive Director, Professor Joan Mandle.
Tips for Success:
Make it personal - Get in contact personally with students who edit the newspaper, create publications, or run the radio station. Ask DM members whom they know! Once in contact, make the case that what DM has to say is important and will be interesting to students.
Make it relevant - Find a “hook” - an idea that links whatever you are communicating with the current concerns of students on your campus.
Make it (somewhat) controversial - Don’t be afraid to raise difficult issues - they attract attention. But try to avoid attacking others, exaggerating, or being so argumentative that you turn most people off. Use examples and facts to support your views, and when you do give your opinon, say that it’s yours.
