high school outrEach

Going into high schools to talk with students in classes or clubs is a terrific way to interact with your community…and it’s fun! Speaking in high schools can reach not only students, but their teachers and their parents as well.

  • Make it easier by having two or even three DM members speaking

  • Plan for between 5 and 15 minutes with students

  • Create and memorize a short script (what would you have liked when you were in high school?)

  • Make it interactive - include asking them (easy) questions

  • Make it fun - any kind of cool game or skit etc. is great

  • Choose a topic high schoolers care about and link it to voting and democracy issues.

  • Encourage them to ask questions.

Tips for Success

Contact (phone, letters) principals for permission at several nearby schools - both private and public.

Emphasize that DM is non-partisan.

Stress that you will be talking about the importance of voting.

Speak slowly and loudly! Smile!!

Prepare cool handouts for students to take home to their parents.

Practice, practice, practice...in front of your DM clubs too.
