Public rallies, protests, marches and or vigils - on or off campus - spread awareness of an problem/issue and can solidify commitment and enthusiasm among participants.

Off-Campus Events organized by community groups can build relationships/coalitions between students and concerned citizens in the surrounding community. DM chapterst may decide to participate as a group and/or encourage others to attend as well. Full information and clarity about the event’s goals and tactics should determine the decision whether to participate.

On-Campus Events

A public group event in support of a cause must be carefully planned. Clear goals and tactics should be decided early (e.g. is it a silent vigil, a rally with speakers music, a march etc?) Discussions with the appropriate dean or administrative personnel will help decide logistics including timing and location, or who can participate.

Create a “Democracy Train” of students carrying signs saying Democracy Matters and other issues, marching in a line around campus

Tips for Success

• Plan a time & location to have high public visibility. You want as many people as possible to see you and receive your important message.

• Bring signs to distribute to participants or askthem to bring their own signs.

• Signs shuld be simple with large lettering to convey your message.

• Optional - have information to hand out to everyone watching your event.

• Plan chants, speakers, music etc to keep participants active (unless a silent vigil).

• Limit the time to an hour.

• Publiciize the event widely with social media, tabling, posters, class raps etc. in and repeat in the days leading up to the event. Make the event and its purpose clear!

• Send press releases or invite local and campus press to cover the event..

• Take photos for students to put on their social media and for use in follow-up press and outreach.
