School Board
What is taught in schools, who is hired, what rules govern students etc. are important political issues.
Attend school board meeting to learn what is happening.
Request time to speak at school board meetings to comment or to raise your concerns.
Lobby one or more members to get them on your side of an issue.
Run for a candidate’s position on a local school board.
Write an opinion article or a letter to the editor of a local newspaper about a school board issue. Always include that you are a student – publishers love to hear from students!
Local City, Town, or Village and County Councils
Laws and policies affecting you, your college and your community are set by these councils.
Attend council meetings to learn about important issues.
Request time to speak in the “public speaking” part of the meeting to comment or raise issues that concern you.
Lobby members of your council concerning issues you want them to bring up, support, or defeat.
