HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE
  FROM DEMOCRACY MATTERS!

Adonal Face BW 3MESSAGE FROM ADONAL

I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together this year! Of course there have been disappointments. But American history shows that with the determined struggle of committed activists, protecting and expanding our rights always prevails.
So in 2022 we begin again. Because we know, despite the odds, that the work of building a real democracy will overcome once again. I thank you all.

Gustavus 2CAMPUS HIGHLIGHT
Gustavus Adolphus College

This brand new Democracy Matters chapter in Minnesota had a terrific first semester! DMers successfully tabled to increase student support for  Congressional voting rights bills. They also collaborated with the school’s Environmental Action Coalition, and  organized “fun” events like cahoot political trivia games. Congratulations to Dom and Gustavus DM members!

Mandle argues that United States domestic politics played a critical role in the failure of COP-26, the recent international climate change conference. As long as the outsized political spending by the fossil fuel industry is allowed to shape United States environmental policy, the problem of global warming will remain intractable.

big tech 2 2FACTS YOU CAN USE
Reigning in Big Tech Companies?

Concerned about the dangers associated with social media platforms, a bipartisan group of Congressional members has attempted to reign in tech industry giants.  But big tech’s multi-million dollar lobbying and campaign donations have stymied reform. The  industry gave $80.7 million to candidates in the 2020 election, and spent an additional $81 million lobbying Congress.

In response to widespread criticism of its platform, Facebook launched one of the most expensive lobbying operations in Washington. In 2020 alone, it spent nearly $20 million, and it  is well on its way to beating that record in 2021.
