DM’S MESSAGE…VOTE BY MAIL…MONEY ON MY MIND…QUOTES & IDEAS…BRAVE NEW FILMS…FACTS YOU CAN USE

money in pol  A MESSAGE FROM YOUR DM STAFF
We want to thank all our DM interns and members for the terrific organizing work they did this year. Congratulations!
We’ll be up and running for the fall semester, reaching out to students everywhere to make sure they’re registered and can vote. We’ll also distribute information comparing candidates’ positions on issues like money in politics, climate change, education, voting rights, health care and more.
As always, DM students will be making a difference as together we protect and strengthen our democracy.
Be well and be safe. See you in the Fall!
Adonal, Joan, Jay and Anita

    mail3VOTING BY MAIL
Democracy Matters has joined more than 50 other national organizations to send an open letter to the Congressional leadership. We demanded that Congress mandate mailed ballots in November to protect our health as well as our right to vote. Our letter stated:

Congress has an obligation to safeguard the integrity of our elections by setting national voting standards, and by providing state officials with urgently needed financial support to expand early voting, vote by mail, and on-line registration. “

dm5 MONEY ON MY MIND
Mandle’s column addresses the need for international cooperation to deal with Covid 19. But the xenophobic Trump Administration has worked to cripple the World Health Organization (suspending funding) and the World Trade Organization (vetoing staff). Both these organizations are vital if we are to build a robust global response to global health crises.

sanders  QUOTE OF THE MONTH

If this [covid19] isn’t a red flag for the current dysfunctional and wasteful healthcare system, frankly, I don’t know what is. Our response to this entire crisis must be guided by the decisions of doctors, scientists, and researchers, not politicians.
Bernie Sanders, March 13, 2020

money in politics 6FACTS YOU CAN USE:  Money Games

Presidential – Donald Trump is significantly outraising Joe Biden. Trump has raised $480 million; Biden $212 million. These totals include $146 million in outside money for Trump; $79 million for Biden. 26% of Trump’s contributions came from small donors; 40% of Biden’s. While 47% of Biden’s donors are women, only 35% of Trump’s are women.

Congressional – The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee brought in $17 million in February, outraising the National Republican Congressional Committee by more than $2million. The 42 Democratic House incumbents most at risk of losing their seats in 2020 have recently raised a massive amount of campaign cash. They are mostly first-term members who had flipped districts won by Donald Trump in 1982. All but two of these Democrats have at least twice as much cash on hand as do their Republican opponents.

Note: A majority of members of Congress are millionaires!  Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.), with $270 million, is the richest Senator; Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.), at $180 million, leads House members.
