Mission and History

Democracy Matters, a non-partisan campus-based project of Common Cause, works to get big private money out of politics and people back in. Offering paid internships to undergraduates and affiliate internships to high school students, Democracy Matters mentors the next generation of leaders dedicated to strengthening our democracy. Students organize actions and projects connecting pro-democracy reforms to issues of environment, civil rights, education, health care, foreign policy, and more.

Founder and President

In 2001, NBA player Adonal Foyle founded Democracy Matters to give college students a voice in the pro-democracy movement and an active role in the national dialogue on money in politics. As President of Democracy Matters, Foyle plays a crucial role in the organization's success.

Our dedicated staff is located throughout the country working with students on their campuses, helping them become more effective grassroots organizers.

Student Summits

At Democracy Matters' most anticipated event of the year, the National Student Summit, students involved in Democracy Matters chapters across the country come together for three days to explore democratic theory and plan strategies to deepen democracy and student political and civic engagement.
