Democracy Matters is a non-partisan organization that was started at Colgate University ten years ago by NBA star Adonal Foyle, one of Colgate’s best-known alumni. The organization was founded on the basis of promoting “fair” and “clean” elections and encouraging students to be politically active.

ALBANY, NY (WAMC) - Over 100 students from 30 college campuses are gathering in Albany for this weekend's 10th Annual Democracy Matters Summit. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas has a preview.

It's any young community organizer's dream: Once a year, students involved in Democracy Matters chapters across the country come together to explore democratic theory and plan strategies to deepen democracy and youth civic engagement. Democracy Matters Executive Director Joan Mandle explains the students are concerned after the Citizens United decision which allowed unlimited spending by corporations on political speech.

Attending the summit gives students the opportunity to network with other young activists from around the country, participate in experimental workshops, and brainstorm with Democracy Matters founder, NBA star Adonal Foyle, who says kids are comfortable knowing that they have power in numbers. Democracy Matters picked Albany as the summit site because the city is conveniently located and is the seat of New York State government.

The 10th Annual Democracy Matters Summit runs January 28th through 30th.
