CAMPUS HIGHLIGHT Democracy Matters students at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania have started off the year flying! They’ve organized voter registration drives, successfully targeting first year students, many of whom have joined DM. They are co-hosting Presidential Debate parties with their Political Science department. And at a Common Cause conference on millennials, Gettysburg DMers presented their plans to get students out to vote. There's more....With “social media storms,” the chapter is asking their Congressional representatives to support the movement to get big money out of politics. Illegal Dark Money in Wisconsin

On September 14th, The Guardian newspaper published 1,500 leaked documents collected by the Wisconsin prosecutors who were investigating suspected campaign violations by Scott Walker, the state’s Governor. The Guardian analysis found that these documents “speak to the cozy relationship between politicians and big business, and to the frustration of millions of Americans who feel disenfranchised by an electoral system that put (sic) the needs of corporate donors before ordinary Americans.” The documents show how individual billionaires came to the rescue of the right-wing, anti-union Governor of Wisconsin when he was threatened with defeat in a recall election. They reveal that the Walker campaign solicited “dark money” donations from rich supporters, money that was directed to 501(c)(4) organizations, the most important of which was the Wisconsin Club for Growth.
